Tough Times + Real Rewards
It has been about 2 and a half weeks since we had our laptop. My last time on the internet was the 27th of May. When things go wrong in Haiti, it takes lots of time and patience to get them fixed. We are finding that out since the lightning strike that hit our home about 3 weeks ago. It knocked out our washer machine, battery charger and it caused our laptop to malfunction. Thankfully, a Canadian in Port-au-Prince was able to repair some errors on our laptop, although the USB ports are all knocked out. We got the laptop back today.
A lot of water has gone under the bridge in the last three weeks. We have finished up several homes for earthquake victims. To build the roof of the last home, we braved a flooded river and terrible mud.
We are continuing our doctrine/baptism class every Saturday morning with good attendance and attentive students.
About 2 weeks ago, one of our pioneer works went from pioneer to organized church. We traveled into the Locorbe area to hold an official service that Sunday morning. The steady tropical rains had turned the road into a quagmire. On one hill, I had all 4 tires of the Yamaha Rhino spinning for about 15 minutes to get up. Several times the Rhino slid into some deep ditches. Mother and Danae got out with our kids and hiked up the hill. We finally arrived, muddy but safe. We participated in the church introductory ceremony. It was good to see the Locorbe work getting established.
Over the last week, both of our kids have been sick. Carlin had a fever over 102 degrees. Alendria also had a high fever. Down here, you don't know what your kids have. Mosquitoes are rampant. In Haiti, they carry Malaria and Dengue fever.
Today, I was up at the hospital visiting one of our church members who is sick. I saw the Cholera patients lying out under a Mango tree. It was tramatic to see little kids lying out on stained cots. For a score of people there was absolutely no shelter, just a tree. Some cholera patients had IV bags laying beside them on the cots; they didn't even have IV bag stands. A great big hole had been dug behind the patients near the hospital. I'm not certain how they are planning to use that hole.
Thank you for your prayers. Though we have had setbacks and it is a hard time in Haiti, yet God is doing a great work here in Haiti.
